2nd Annual Visit From Santa

Squid Dissection

One of our lead biologists will be guiding the group through a fun and information-filled squid dissection!  This is one of our most popular in-class programs and we're excited to have the opportunity to offer it to the public.  Please register in advance so we can be sure to have enough squid so each family can work on their own.  This program is recommended for children ages 8 and above but all are welcome.

Sea Glass Jewelry Workshop

Spend a fun, relaxing evening here at Biomes and make your own sea glass jewelry earrings!  Local artist Georgia Hitti is leading the workshop and will provide all the supplies and knowledge you need to make your own pair of earrings that you can keep for yourself or give as a wonderful hand-made gift.  We will supply the sea glass, wire, clasps, gift box, and have tools to share.  If you have your own wire tools, please bring them with you.  You are also welcome to bring your own sea glass if you have a special piece you've collected!  This event is designed for adults and is BYOB.

Superhero Training with Spidey and Wonder Girl

Have you ever wanted to be a super-hero??  Tonight is your chance to get training from two of the best super-heroes around!  Spider Man and Wonder Woman will share their story and their super-hero moves with us as we learn to be just like them!  We’ll also have a craft to make and plenty of time to pose for pictures.

Girl Scout Overnight

Ages 6 and up.  Ratio 1 adult to 5 children.  $40/child, $20/adult. 

Spend a night at Biomes!  Tour the exhibits, go on a scavenger hunt, make a craft project, and participate in special animal encounters!  All Scouts will earn a special Biomes Overnight Badge!  Evening and morning snacks provided.

Animal Experiences with Dave Marchetti

Animal Experiences with Dave Marchetti is a fun filled hour with over 20 of Dave's animals including turtles, lizards, snakes, tree frog, hedgehog, chinchilla and Wally the alligator. After learning about some of the animals the audience is welcome to touch and hold all their favorites.

Costume Contest!  Prizes given out in a number of categories with the grand prize being a 1 year family membership.

Trick-or-Treat trail! Visit each of the animals on our trick-or-treat trail and receive some cool, marine-related treats! (For the safety of our animals, we will not be giving out candy.)

Darwin's Pumpkin Patch! Darwin will have his very own pumpkin patch to  explore and snack on! You'll never see a happier tortoise than when he's in a pumpkin patch on Halloween!

Craft table with a fun, easy Halloween-themed craft to make and bring home.

Learn about the owls that live in Rhode Island and discover their unique adaptations for hunting at night.  You will also get a chance to meet a couple live owls!  And since we’re so close to Halloween, we’ll make a great Halloween owl craft and explore the reasons we connect owls with witches and Halloween!

Our special guest tonight will be Michelangelo, the orange turtle, of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!  He’ll pose for pictures and hang out with us as we spend some extra time learning about our turtles and tortoise here at Biomes.  And as long as Darwin the Tortoise cooperates, every child will be able to make a clay impression of a ‘scute’ on his shell to bring home!

Glow-in-the-Dark Painting Party with A Minion!

Come celebrate the end of the summer with a fun, silly Minion and a painting party!  The minion will make his way around Biomes visiting the animals and posing for pictures.  Our resident muralist, Bob Rattigan, will give a quick lesson on sketching a Minion and teach some basic painting techniques including some time under the black light with glow-in-the-dark paints!

Marine Biology Career Workshop

Ready for a career in marine biology? Spend an afternoon working side-by-side with our staff and volunteers as you learn what it takes to keep an aquarium running and hundreds of animals healthy! From collecting the animals out at sea to designing exhibits and keeping them healthy, you'll learn about it all! Participate in tasks such as food preparation and feeding, water testing, tank maintenance, and animal care! 

Open to boys and girls ages 14-18.

Tools and Tanks Career Nights

Originally designed to help Scouts earn some special badges, these nights are now open to the public!  Come learn what it’s like to work in the field of marine biology!  We’ll have some stations set up so you can learn about the different tools we use to keep our animals happy and healthy including a microscope, thermometer, pH meter, hydrometer, and more!  You can also help feed some of the animals, and talk with our staff and volunteers about the work we do and what we did to get here.

Bingo with Spongebob

3D Glow in the Dark Painting Party!

Join local mural artist Robert Ratigan for a fun night of 3D glow-in-the-dark painting! Robert will demonstrate some cool painting techniques and then everyone will get to create their own 3D paintings! 

With the help of some glow-in-the-dark face paint, you will also be transformed into a piece of art-work yourself and be added into the photo back-drop you see above!

Prentice Stout is a world-renowned marine biologist, photographer, public speaker and educator. For 37 years he coordinated the teacher-student advisory at the URI Bay Campus, and now lectures with his slide presentations on marine life and conservation issues from his world travels.

We're honored to have him as one of our Wednesday Family night guest speakers at Biomes, where he will present his slide lecture about his trip to the Galapagos Islands.

A Celebration of Trees

Towering high above us, trees are the great guardians of our planet. Storywalker Wendy Fachon shares tree stories of both practical and mystical significance. 

Learn more about the heroic role trees play in sustaining animal life on our lands and in our oceans, and how trees offer us with a rich abundance of resources - food, medicine, shelter, wood, paper, compost, and oxygen. 

Participants will also learn the craft of papermaking with a hands-on project. We'll recycle old scraps of paper into new paper that you can take home with you!
